Clarification On Alberto Del Rio Re-Signing With WWE

Did Alberto Del Rio re-sign with WWE?

WWE major shockwaves when the company announced it had acquired Mexico’s AAA Lucha Libre promotion. It’s still unclear how exactly WWE will utilize the legendary promotion, but Triple H said that AAA will continue to be “the premier destination for wrestling in Mexico.”

On Monday, Superluchas’ Ernesto Ocampo reported that Alberto Del Rio and the following AAA talent signed a contract with WWE:

  • Hijo de Dr. Wagner
  • Hijo del Vikingo
  • La Parka
  • La Hiedra
  • Lady Flammer
  • Lady Maravilla
  • Niño Hamburguesa

In an update, the @luchablog Twitter/X account stated that WWE didn’t “give” Alberto Del Rio a contract. In actuality, WWE is likely assuming responsibility for the contract that Alberto signed with AAA last year. They also noted that Ocampo will likely know more details about the contract statuses, but the situation was evolving since it was first announced last month.

Additionally, Ocampo posted another update and said that the AAA wrestlers will be on the roster that will compete in Mexico. However, a few of them, like Vikingo, could possibly appear on joint events with NXT in the United States.

Update: F4WOnline.com’s Dave Meltzer is also reporting that Alberto Del Rio signed a new contract with WWE. However, he also noted that he does not expect Alberto to appear on WWE television, and he’ll be used on AAA events.

WWE has not commented on Alberto’s status as of this time.

Would Alberto Del Rio be welcomed back to WWE?

Alberto Del Rio’s last run in WWE ended in 2016 after he reportedly exercised an opt-out clause from his WWE contract. After his release was finalized in September 2016, Alberto joined IMPACT Wrestling under the name “Alberto El Patron.” He won the promotion’s World Championship in 2017, but he was ultimately suspended and stripped of the title after a domestic violence issue with his then-girlfriend, Saraya. Alberto was then released by IMPACT after he no-showed a Lucha Underground vs. IMPACT event in New Orleans.

Alberto Del Rio was also arrested and charged with allegedly sexually assaulting another former partner in 2020. However, his trial was delayed several times, and the charges were ultimately dropped in December 2021. With his legal troubles seemingly behind him, Alberto returned to AAA at the 2023 Lucha Libre World Cup. He later won the company’s AAA Mega Championship at Triplemanía XXXII: Mexico City in August 2024. Earlier this year, Alberto once again faced criticism after he was suspended from competing in Tijuana after throwing a chair at a fan during an incident in the crowd.

Despite his repeated pushes for one more run in WWE, it doesn’t appear likely. In 2023, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful followed up on Alberto’s claim that there were plans for him to return to WWE before Vince McMahon left. According to a higher-up in WWE, there was “no fucking chance” that would happen. That source clarified that there’s “never been any real consideration” to bring him back since he left in 2016.
