Rey Mysterio and the wrestling world got quite a shock yesterday when it was announced that WWE had acquired the lucha libre promotion AAA.
During a Sunday panel at WWE World, Rey Mysterio was asked about yesterday’s blockbuster announcement and called it a dream come true.
“That’s a dream come true, something that I never thought would happen,” Rey Mysterio said. “I was talking about it yesterday. My first national television opportunity was with AAA in 1992. I was 18 years old, I had just left Tijuana, and I was chasing my dream to become a wrestler. And the first company that opened up their doors was AAA.
“Antonio Peña, rest in peace. So to see that come around full circle, and now in 2025, it’s sad that he’s no longer here, but his vision was incredible. For him to have trusted me, this skinny little kid that came from Tijuana, that wanted to demonstrate to the world that he had something to show. But never did I think he imagined that I would make it to this level.
“I never imagined that I would make it to this level, but to be able to do that now and merge the two most important companies in the world to me, AAA and WWE. And have one single company, and not just have Luchadores represent Lucha Libre here and there. Now it’s a company that will represent Lucha Libre around the world as a whole. I think if it wasn’t on the map before, now it’s definitely going to be on the map. And I’m so proud of being a part of it.”
The return of Worlds Collide
The Master of the 619 later reflected upon the first Worlds Collide event and the fact that, due to this merger, the event will return later this year.
“I was a part of that pay-per-view,” Rey Mysterio said. “To see that come around full circle as well is like amazing, man. And that was a one-time event, apparently. And now we are bringing it back now that we have merged with AAA.”
