While it’s still unclear when Roman Reigns found out he was losing in the main event at WrestleMania, one thing being reported is that former champion Brock Lesnar knew he was dropping the WWE World Heavyweight title when he signed his new contract with the company.
While it’s obviously a scripted environment, it would have looked bad – and likely caused some bad blood between the two – if Vince McMahon worked out a new contract while he was champion, and then immediately changed plans to take the title off him. But according to reports, the former champion walked out of negotiations knowing Seth Rollins would leave WrestleMania with the belt.
Lesnar appeared on ESPN Sports Center to announce the deal on March 24, and noted that he and Vince came to terms the previous day at the WWE RAW taping. Apparently Brock, Paul Heyman and Seth Rollins were working together heading into WrestleMania, which means officials had to have the finish finalized (more or less) on or before March 23.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there is some backstage resentment from a few WWE Superstars over the way fans turned on Roman Reigns when it became clear he was next in line for the world title. Reigns is generally well-liked and respected backstage and has certainly come a long way in the ring in a short amount of time, and there’s definitely some bitterness going around that his ascension to the top was squashed through very little fault of his own.
