UFC recently announced that it will be adding a flyweight division (125 lbs.) to it’s list of weigh classes — beginning in 2012.
The plan as of this moment is for the first flyweight fights to take place at a pay-per-view event on March 3, 2012.
Ian McCall will be fighting Demetrious Johnson, while Joseph Benavidez fights Yasuhiro Urushitani, with the winners facing each other to decide the first ever UFC flyweight champion.
“It’s not really a tournament,” UFC President Dana White said. “It’s two fights in the same weight class with the best guys — we’ve done that a million times. Both fights on the same card and who wins will fight for the title.”
“We wouldn’t do it if we didn’t have a stacked division,” White said.
