WWE Studios’ ‘Bending the Rules’ begins production in New Orleans

STAMFORD, Conn. – WWE Studios announced today that WWE Superstar Edge will co-star in the studios’ upcoming action-comedy, Bending the Rules, alongside co-stars Jamie Kennedy, Jennifer Esposito, Alicia Witt, Kevin Weisman, Philip Baker Hall and Jessica Walter. The film has begun principal photography in and around New Orleans.
Artie Mandelberg (Inside Out) will direct the film from a screenplay by Dylan Schaffer. Bending the Rules is produced by WWE Studios Executive Vice President Michael Pavone and executive produced by WWE Studios Vice President David Calloway.
Theo Gold (Jamie Kennedy), the New Orleans Assistant District Attorney, is about to have the worst day of his life. Not only does his wife decide to leave him on the eve of his birthday, but he manages to lose a high profile case against detective Nick Blades (Edge). Now, the only thing Theo has left is the car his father, Herb (Phillip Baker Hall), entrusted to him – a 1956 Studebaker Goldenhawk. But when he discovers that his father’s pride and joy has been stolen, Theo is determined to do whatever it takes to get that car back. The same person he just tried to put away, Nick Blades, becomes his only ally in the police department. As the two set off to find the car, action and comedy quickly develop, because the stolen car is merely a small piece of a much larger puzzle.
Jamie Kennedy plays assistant D.A. Theo Gold, a prosecutor with a firm grip on right and wrong – until he becomes Blades’ unexpected partner in trying to prevent his own assassination. Kennedy most recently starred in the comedy feature Finding Bliss and currently stars as Eli James in the hit series Ghost Whisperer. He also starred in the comedies Extreme Movie with Michael Cera and Son of the Mask. The multi-talented actor has also written, produced and performed on the soundtrack of such films as On the Outside (produced), Kickin’ It Old School (produced and starred) and Malibu’s Most Wanted (wrote, starred, composed and performed songs).
WWE Superstar Edge plays New Orleans police detective Nick Blades, a hard-nosed detective whose freewheeling enforcement of the law has always gotten results. But recently, it landed him in big trouble, putting him on trial for corruption. Edge has proven to be one of the WWE’s most decorated Superstars. He is a nine-time World Champion and has won a record 12 WWE Tag Team Championships. Edge made his feature film debut in Highlander: Endgame and is a best selling author for his autobiography Adam Copeland on Edge.
Jennifer Esposito is police officer Olivia Garcia who risks her job to help her suspended colleague, Blades, in his investigation. Esposito earned a Screen Actors Guild award for her part in the ensemble of the Oscar-winning Crash. She recently starred with Val Kilmer in the action-thriller Conspiracy and had recurring roles in the FX series Rescue Me and ABC’s Samantha Who?.
Alicia Witt portrays rookie D.A. Roslyn Wohl, Gold’s understudy in his pursuit of all-or-nothing legal justice. With a regular role on the hit series Friday Night Lights this season, Witt continues a successful career that began at age seven with a supporting role in David Lynch’s Dune. She recently starred opposite Al Pacino in Jon Avnet’s 88 Minutes and in Wayne Wang’s Last Holiday with Queen Latifah and LL Cool J. Witt also has a flourishing music career. The music video for her first single, “Anyway,†off her self-titled EP (available on iTunes) is premiering on mtvU on Aug. 30.
Kevin Weisman plays Gil, a small-time crook with a big secret. Weisman was recently featured in Rob Reiner’s romantic comedy Flipped, and has appeared in many other features, including Clerks II and Gone in Sixty Seconds. He also starred for five years on the award-winning television hit Alias and has appeared on numerous other TV series.
Phillip Baker Hall is Herb Gold, the owner of the 1956 Studebaker Goldenhawk. Hall’s 40-year acting career has included roles in such memorable films as David Fincher’s Zodiac, Bruce Almighty with Jim Carrey, Wolfgang Petersen’s Air Force One with Harrison Ford, The Contender starring Gary Oldman and all three Rush Hour movies. His numerous television appearances include recent episodes of The Life and Times of Tim and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Jessica Walter plays Lena Gold, the flamboyant former movie star, who suspects her elderly husband of cheating on her. The veteran stage, film and TV star is currently voicing one of the character’s on FX’s animated series Archer and will be a series regular on TV Land’s upcoming comedy Retired at 35 opposite George Segal. Walter earned her fourth Emmy nomination for the comedy series Arrested Development. Her two previous Emmy nominations were for Trapper John M.D. and The Streets of San Francisco. She won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress In a Limited Series for Amy Prentiss. Her feature film credits include, The Slums of Beverly Hills, Unaccompanied Minors, The Flamingo Kid, P.C.U. and Clint Eastwood’s Play Misty for Me, for which she earned her second Golden Globe nomination. Her first Golden Globe nod was for Most Promising Newcomer for Grand Prix.
Director Artie Mandelberg is an executive producer and director on the award-winning TNT series, Saving Grace. His other credits include Wilder Napalm, Medium, CSI: Miami and Moonlighting.
