It is safe to say that one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time is the 17-time WWE Undisputed Champion, John Cena. He is currently in his final run as a WWE Superstar.
But will Cena return to the Squared Circle after his retirement tour comes to an end? According to him, he won’t go back on his word.
Recently, John Cena was interviewed by Michael Strahan on Good Morning America. During the interview, Cena revealed that he will never return to the ring once he’s retired, as he doesn’t want to disrespect the fans.
“There is no way [that I will be returning to the ring after my retirement]. There is absolutely… I don’t want to speak in absolutes because I don’t want to close any opportunity. But I made a promise to the fans that have allowed me to be here for a quarter of a century. They’ve allowed me to sit with you today. I wouldn’t want to disrespect them like that. This is an event that I want, when people attend, it’s very exclusive. We do Geosite merch. The ‘I was there’ stuff is really select, and limited, and the moments I share with people. I wouldn’t want to ruin that just for selfish gain.”
Why did John Cena announce his retirement tour early?
During the same interview, Cena shared that he chose to retire as he could feel that he did not have a lot of gas left in him. The 17-time WWE Undisputed Champion also mentioned that he wanted to have a year-long retirement tour just so he could make his final run in WWE special for the fans.
“Well, speaking to a retired athlete, I think you intrinsically know, when your instinct says, ‘I’m a step slower right now.’ And it’s then just a battle of how long do I fight those red flags before it could be counterproductive. I still look good, I still feel good, I still feel like I can perform at a WWE level. But I also think that it is time to… It is time for me to step aside. And let the young talent step forward. So, what I wanted to do is something that’s never been done.
“Six months before the tour, I announced my retirement, and I said for the year, I would perform in 36 dates. We are halfway through. I think nobody thought I was serious. And now that we are halfway through, people really understand that my last match is in December, and it is time for me to move on. The audiences have been electric. The programming has been riveting. I’m really grateful to all the WWE fans and certainly WWE for letting me do this. It’s been pretty exciting,” John Cena said.
John Cena also mentioned that he will remain an ambassador for WWE.
