Gunther: It’s My Responsibility To Make Sure Goldberg’s Legacy Dies

Gunther sends a strong message to Goldberg.

At WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, Goldberg will challenge Gunther for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in what will also be his final professional wrestling match. This comes after Goldberg confronted “The Ring General” on WWE Raw, informing him that he was “next” on his list. Gunther, however, now seems to embrace being “next” for the WWE Hall of Famer.

On this week’s episode of Raw, Gunther recalled his recent encounter with Goldberg as well as the thinking he did after it.

“Last week was supposed to be my celebration. Me celebrating regaining what’s rightfully mine, the World Heavyweight Championship. But instead, none other than Bill Goldberg walked down here, look me straight into the eye, and told me that I am next. So I did a lot of thinking,” Gunther said in a mid-ring promo. “I thought a lot about what it means to be ‘next.’ Usually being ‘next’ means getting speared out of your boots, jackhammer, one. two, three and wake up looking at the lights. Bill Goldberg is the most destructive man of his generation, but it is not 1999 anymore. It is 2025, and right now, I’m the guy. I’m the best professional wrestler in this company and the World Heavyweight Championship around my waist proves it. “

According to Gunther, the current form of Goldberg, at 58, is a one trick pony that can’t come close to lacing his boots. Still, Gunther intends to humiliate him even more, specifically by killing his legacy.

“Bill, I want to take the moment now and officially apologize to your wife and to your son for everything that I’m going to do to the man that used to be Goldberg,” Gunther said. “I’m unlike anybody you ever stepped in the ring with. I embarrassed you once, and I said at the Saturday Night’s Main Event, I’m going to embarrass you again because it’s my personal responsibility to make sure that the legacy and the myth of Bill Goldberg forever dies.”
