AEW’s Buddy Matthews Shares Unfortunate Update Amid Recovery From Ankle Injury

Buddy Matthews says his recovery from an ankle injury is not going as planned.

Matthews shared an update during a recent stream on Instagram Live, telling fans that his ankle is not recovering “as well as I thought it would be.” The AEW star has been sidelined since getting injured at AEW Grand Slam Australia in February.

“The ankle is not recovering as well as I thought it would be. There’s no mobility to it. If I can’t have mobility, I can’t move properly,” Buddy Matthews explained. “Once it hits three months without healing, it becomes chronic.”

Matthews also said that he hoped to be back in the ring in April, but that has not happened. Matthews challenged Kazuchika Okada for the AEW Continental Championship at Grand Slam. Unfortunately, he injured his ankle during the match and hasn’t been back on AEW TV since then.

While speaking on an April 2025 episode of Insight With Chris Van Vliet, Buddy Matthews provided an update on his injury and detailed what exactly happened to him.

“It’s okay. Rolled it pretty bad. Had an X ray, MRI. There was no break, but there was partial ligament tear and cartilage damage,” Matthews said. “[I’m] walking. I haven’t ran, I haven’t jumped, I’ve just started implementing cardio, but then it kind of stiffens up. And, you know, we’re working through it, but the docs was were telling me I’ve never seen an ankle roll that much under someone without completely destroying, smashing, disintegrating the bones. So I didn’t break a bone, which was incredible, but then I had to wrestle 15 minutes after it.”

Buddy Matthews shared when exactly the injury happened, and how fans watching the show can tell something went wrong.
