It appears fans weren’t the only ones who found out about WWE’s nixed WrestleMania plans from the upcoming Netflix documentary trailer. A couple of superstars learned the same way after seeing the teaser.
The trailer for WWE: Unreal dropped in the lead-up to WrestleMania 41. Eagle eyed-fans were quick to spot creative’s original pitches for the PLE card seconds into the teaser. The pitches eventually found their way to the internet.
Now, a new report From Fightful Select says some superstars found out about the original plans from the Netflix teaser.
“Fightful gave a rundown recently of the matches, when and how many of them changed, and in the week following the trailer dropping, we’ve heard from a number of talent,” per the report. “There were some talent that approached Fightful and said that they had heard rumors of their matches that came to fruition, but weren’t ever approached with them.
“There were multiple wrestlers listed on the whiteboard who tell Fightful that they found out they were once planned for a WrestleMania match from the trailer.” The report further stated that a couple of WWE superstars were “surprised to see Asuka’s name listed as it was said that her being back in time was ‘very ambitious.’”
Asuka didn’t work WWE WrestleMania 41
Despite her name being listed on the rundown, Asuka didn’t appear at WrestleMania 41. The Empress of Tomorrow has been sidelined with an injury since 2024.
WWE had reportedly discussed a return pitch for her earlier this year, but those plans haven’t come to fruition at the time of this writing.
WrestleZone will have the latest update on Asuka as it becomes available.
