AEW Dynamite Results

Kenny Omega vs. Blake Christian (with Lee Johnson)

Omega and Christian feel each other out. Omega gains the upper hand. Christian showcases his agility and flips Omega off. Omega chops him and drops him with a back suplex. Christian takes control as he gouges Omega’s eyes and hits a Spear on the apron. He dives onto Omega at ringside. Lee Johnson interferes, and Omega punches him. Omega dumps Christian with a Snap dragon and hits him with another. Omega blasts Christian with a V-trigger and hits the One-Winged Angel for the win.

Winner: Kenny Omega

Kenny Omega’s Challengers Appear

Omega grabs a microphone and says he’d like to wrestle every week, but it’s unfortunate that he doesn’t get to. He jokes that he told the boss he’d make it quick. Omega says it’ll be a different story at AEW Dynasty, as he’ll have to deal with Ricochet and Speedball Mike Bailey. Bailey interrupts. Bailey congratulates Omega and says that he’s an inspiration. He tells Omega that he admires him as a wrestler and as a person. He says that come Dynasty, he won’t hold anything back, as he will kick his head off and take the title.

Ricochet appears on the video screen and says he’s dressed for the best day of his life, as he’s not at the show due to his wedding. He says he will show everyone that he is the best in the world when he wins the title at AEW Dynasty. He calls his victory inevitable. Omega says that it won’t be about making friends, and he doesn’t need more anymore. He says that Bailey isn’t his comrade, and the only thing he has room for is his title and his legacy. Omega says that Bailey and Ricochet are another stepping stone to cementing his legacy. He welcomes Bailey to AEW before doing his “Goodbye and goodnight” bit.

Grade: B

This was fine. There was a lot of discourse about the match ahead of time, as fans worried that Christian would get too much offense in. This went the other way, as it was a step above a squash match. The Bailey/Omega confrontation hit the right note of establishing that Bailey is respectful but determined, while Omega is focused on his legacy.

Backstage, Chris Jericho is standing by with The Learning Tree. He says that it’s time to take off the masks and reveal some truths. He says he’s sick of asking Big Bill and Bryan Keith to prove themselves. Jericho tells them to question if they want to be with him, and if so, they need to prove it. They walk off. Jericho tells Bandido that he wants his mask, and he challenges him to a Title vs. Mask match at AEW Dynasty.

MJF Responds To The Hurt Syndicate

MJF takes some shots at the crowd. He says he’s been looking at the Hurt Syndicate card, and he wants to talk to MVP. He calls out MVP, who answers. MJF calls MVP a legend. He says that after everything that happened with Adam Cole, he told himself he wouldn’t have friends in this business. He says that MVP does business, and he would like to be in the business of hurting people. MJF extends his hand. Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin interrupt.

Lashley gets in MJF’s face and tells him to give him the card. Lashley rips up the card. He raises his fist, and MVP says, “We’re cool.”MJF backs up and says, “We’re cool.” He walks away. Big Bill and Bryan Keith interrupt. Keith says they have business to attend to. Bill says Lashley and Benjamin need challengers. He says he can’t tell whether MVP is a pimp or a businessman. MVP says he’s a little bit of both, and he’s about to have Lashley and Benjamin make them their bitches. Bill says MVP is the MVP of being their bitches. Bill says that he wasn’t pinned when he lost the tag team titles, and he never got a rematch. He says they’re going to take the titles back. MVP says they will get an opportunity if they win a match.

Grade: B+

It feels a little early to have dissension in the Hurt Syndicate, though they wound up making up later in the show. MJF acknowledged what happened with Adam Cole but basically ignored it, as he was ready to join up with MVP. That seemed odd, given how long the MJF/Cole story was, and the whole point was that MJF would never trust anyone again. It’ll be interesting to see how this progresses.

Backstage, AEW Women’s World Champion Toni Storm and Thunder Rosa discuss their tag team match later in the show. Rosa says she wants the title back.

Brody King vs. Kyle Fletcher (with Don Callis)

Fletcher takes the fight to King right away. King overpowers Fletcher and hits him with some clubbing blows. King slams Fletcher and continues to ground him. Fletcher drills King with a kick and stomps him. King hits Fletcher with a stiff shot, sending him to the outside. King and Fletcher trade blows. With a dive to the outside, King takes control. Fletcher sends King into the ring post. He rocks King with a kick and dives onto him at ringside.

Fletcher hits an elbow drop. King rallies and slams Fletcher onto the apron. Fletcher and King trade blows again. King nails Fletcher with an elbow and drops him with a lariat. Fletcher catches King with some kicks and hits a Tombstone for a near fall. King floors him with a lariat again. Mark Davis comes down and pulls Fletcher out of the way when King goes for a cannonball. Fletcher hits a Brainbuster on the turnbuckle for the win.

Winner: Kyle Fletcher

Fletcher and Davis attack King, but Powerhouse Hobbs makes the save. Officials separate Hobbs and Davis, but they get in the ring and fight off the security guards.

Grade: B+

Nothing wrong with a good, hard-hitting match, and that’s what we got here. King has taken a lot of losses, but he’s such a good powerhouse. This was a solid bounce-back win for Fletcher. The Brainbuster was nasty. Davis helping him win made you wonder if they do an Aussie Open reunion soon. This match led right into the next one somewhat smoothly, which was nice.

Mark Davis vs. Powerhouse Hobbs

Dabis and Hobbs start brawling again. Hobbs suplexes Davis. Davis gains the upper hand with some strikes. Hobbs fires up and takes control as he slams Davis.

He hits some clotheslines in the corner. Davis catches Hobbs with a kick. Hobbs drops him with a spinebuster for the win.

Winner: Powerhouse Hobbs

Grade: B

This was set up as a smooth transition from the Fletcher match, but the angle with the security guards drew it out a bit. The match itself was unremarkable, but the right guy won at least.

Backstage, Nick Wayne and The Patriarchy (sans Christian Cage) are standing by. Wayne is asked about standing up to Christian Cage, and he says things are starting to make sense to him. He says they executed a plan by costing Cope his match last week.

In an interview backstage, “Hangman” Adam Page is asked about entering the Owen Hart Tournament. Swerve Strickland interrupts and confronts him, telling him not to play with him. Prince Nana pulls Strickland away.

Tony Schiavone Interviews Rated FTR

Rated FTR is interviewed by Tony Schiavone. Dax Harwood apologizes for walking out on Cope last week. He says it felt like they took their eye off the ball by helping Cope. Wheeler says he doesn’t like seeing them fight. He highlights how Cope helped him when he was struggling, and without either of them, he didn’t have anything.

Harwood apologizes again and says he took it too far. Harwood says they have helped Cope with his goals, and now it’s time for them to target the tag titles. Wheeler says he wants to go after the trios titles together. Cope challenges the Death Riders to a trios title match at AEW Dynasty.

Grade: B

This was almost a very strong follow-up to the angle from last week, where Harwood walked off. They didn’t quite lean on the dissension enough, as Harwood was very apologetic, though it was clear that he wasn’t quite on the same page with Wheeler and Cope. It felt like they rushed to the match set-up here, whereas drawing out the conflict moe would have helped this a lot.

Swerve Strickland Calls Out Jon Moxley

Stickland comes to the ring and quickly calls out AEW World Champion Jon Moxley. Moxley comes out by himself. Strickland says he has been letting this go on for too long. He asks Moxley what happened to him, as he used to be revered here, but now he hid behind his stable. Strickland says that Moxley isn’t worthy of being a champion. He says that everything that Moxley used to describe himself was now looking across from him. Claudio Castagnoli sneaks up behind Prince Nana. Moxley says the match is Swerve vs. Swerve. He asks Strickland who he is.

Moxley says he knows who Strickland is and he knows what he could be. He says he has had high hopes for Strickland, and at AEW Dynasty, he will have the chance to become who he can be. He says Strickland must ask himself how far he’s willing to go. Moxley says Strickland hasn’t suffered enough yet, but he will. He says his sport has been taken over by billionaires and talent agencies and Instagram kids, but Swerve gives him hope that what he has put himself through has been worth it. Moxley tells Strickland he’s not going to give it to him, and he’s ready to go right now.

Marina Shafir sneaks up, but Willow Nightingale stops her. Stickland says he’s smarter than him. He calls himself violence and the most dangerous man in AEW. He vows to win the title and continue to lead the dynasty era. Moxley and Strickland stare each other down. Moxley leaves. Shafir attacks Nightingale, and they brawl. Castagnoli pulls Shafir away.

Grade: A

Strickland was excellent here, and his points about Moxley were spot-on. It made you wonder if we might see a Moxley redemption arc sooner rather than later. Swerve has a lot of momentum, and much like last year, it seems like Dynasty is his time to win the gold. Moxley was good as well, as he’s still “the guy”, and he wants Strickland to prove himself. This helped build up the match and add weight to it.

Samoa Joe and HOOK are walking backstage, and they find Max Caster talking to Top Flight. Joe sneaks up behind Caster and chokes him out.

In an interview, Jay White discusses Will Ospeay and “Hangman” Adam Page declaring for the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament and announces that he is entering the tournament.

Top Flight In Action

Alex Finley and Devo Knight are announced as Top Flight’s opponents. Darius Martin controls the action early on. Top Flight ultimately picks up the decisive win in a squash match.

Winners: Top Flight

Top Flight confronts Lio Rush and Action Andretti in the crowd.

Grade: C+

Nothing to write home about here, as this was a squash match. This was fitting for AEW Dark, or even AEW Rampage, not so much Dynamite. Good for Top Flight to get a match in front of the hometown crowd, but couldn’t they have faced a more established team?

Mark Briscoe vs. Konosuke Takeshita

Takeshita and Briscoe battle back and forth early on. Brisco hits Takeshita with a Death Valley Drier. Takeshita fires back with an elbow strike. Briscoe tries to rally, and Takeshita drops him with a boot to the face. Takeshita hits Briscoe with a DDT onto the apron. Briscoe rallies again with a dropkick. He hits Takeshita with an elbow strike. Briscoe keeps rolling with a blockbuster onto the floor. He dives onto him through the ropes.

Takeshita evades a Froggy Bow and suplexes Takeshita. Briscoe answers with a lariat. Takeshita and Briscoe trade blows. They exchange suplexes. Takeshita nails Briscoe with a knee. Briscoe hits the Jay Driller, but Takeshita gets his foot on the rope. Takeshita hits Briscoe with a rolling elbow and the Raging Fire for the win.

Winner: Konosuke Takeshita

Grade: B+

As with Fletcher vs. King, very good match here, and it was fun. Likewise, Briscoe is often put in these spots where he has good matches, but he takes a lot of losses. Takeshita needed a bounce-back win, and this got the job done.

Backstage, Claudio Castagnoli, Wheeler Yuta, and PAC respond to Rated FTR and say they challenge them to a match at AEW Dynasty, as they dismiss the idea that the challengers could call them out for a match.

The Hut Syndicate is asked about what happened with MJF. Lashley makes it clear that he has a problem with MVP recruiting MJF. MVP says they’ve been talking about a fourth member for a while now, and he likes MVP. He says that MJF has done some terrible things, and that could be good for him. MVP says they can revisit this, but they should focus on Big Bill right now. They walk away together.

Megan Bayne & Penelope Ford vs. Thunder Rosa & Toni Storm

Bayne and Rosa start the match and feel each other out. They battle back and forth. Ford and Storm tag in. Storm dumps Ford with a German suplex. Rosa and Storm double-team Ford. Ford and Bayne take control. They isolate Rosa and keep her grounded. Rosa rallies, and she and Ford are both down after a clothesline.

Storm tags in and takes control. She drops Bayne with a DDT on the floor. Rosa slams Ford with a Death Valley Driver. Bayne slams Rosa. Storm and Bayne keep battling. Storm hits a hip attack. Bayne accidentally kicks Fod.

Bayne drops Storm with Fate’s Descent for the win.

Winners: Megan Bayne & Penelope Ford

Grade: B+

Good win for Bayne here, as she continues to impress. The Storm/Rosa reunion was fun. This would have worked better if someone more established was Bayne’s partner. Still, Bayne got a big win by pinning Storm, and that helped solidify her as a legitimate contender.
