A WWE insider reportedly complained that The Rock “turned more than Big Show in his entire career” in his WWE return, according to a report from Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer. This comes after Dwayne Johnson’s controversial promo during last week’s (February 21) episode of WWE SmackDown.
The Rock’s return saw him confront WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, but the segment was widely criticized by viewers. During the promo, Rock managed to swing between insulting and praising the crowd, creating confusion as to whether he was presenting as a babyface or heel. It also didn’t carve a clear path for his storyline with Cody Rhodes, which left fans scratching their heads.
According to Meltzer, some within WWE also had a negative reaction to the promo, unfavorably comparing its inconsistency to Big Show’s many face and heel turns.
The Rock ‘turned 3 or 4 times’ in WWE SmackDown return
“As one person [in WWE] told me, it’s like in one segment he turned more than Big Show did in his entire career, which is an exaggeration, but I think he turned three or four times,” Meltzer said during the latest Wrestling Observer Radio.
Meltzer went on to suggest that The Rock was teasing a Mr. McMahon vs. Steve Austin feud between him and Cody, but it’s unclear if WWE is heading in this direction as the build continues for WrestleMania 41.
