Mariah May says the numbers don’t lie.
Ahead of AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door, Mina Shirakawa‘s arrival in AEW tested Mariah May, as she was close to both Mina and Toni Storm. Shirakawa and Storm kissed each other on AEW television, and the angle sparked some controversy.
Speaking on Wrestling with Freddie, Mariah May was asked about how the kissing angle was pitched.
So it was not pitched. We just did it,” Mariah May said. “Mina and I are extremely close, we’ve always been very close, ever since STARDOM. We just did it [laughs], and the time around, they were like, ‘Hey, can you guys stop kissing?’ [Laughs] I think there’s a bit of an archaic view on it, and people seem to think we have no autonomy over our bodies. It’s my choice who I kiss, it’s my choice what I do, and if I’m not comfortable doing something, I would always say so. I remember seeing the usual suspects being like, ‘Oh my god, this is setting women’s wrestling back so much.’ First of all, no one made us do it, we chose to do it.”
Mariah May: If I Don’t Want To Do Something, I Won’t
May reiterated that she and Shirakawa show affection like that. She said that if she didn’t want to do something, she wouldn’t do it. May also stated that the numbers did not lie.
“That’s just how we show affection to each other, and we always have in our friendship,” Mariah May said. “Like I said, if I don’t want to do something, I won’t. But myself, Mina, and Toni are three extremely decorated women’s wrestlers who off our own backs have become very successful all over the world. So to try to tell us we’re setting women’s wrestling back was pretty crazy to me. Like you said, the numbers don’t lie. I think myself, Toni, and Mina got the best-rated segments for about eight weeks in a row, as we should.
WrestleZone will have coverage of AEW Dynamite as it airs on August 21.
