Cody Rhodes has taken inspiration from Ric Flair when deciding what shoes to wear on TV.
The WWE Champion has made what shoes he wears an important part of his character on TV. He has worn Air Jordan’s during certain run-ins on Raw. However, he usually dons a suit and dress shoes for promo segments.
Cody Rhodes spoke with Joe La Puma on Complex‘s Sneaker Shopping about his view on sneakers. Cody was asked to pick a favorite pair of Jordans, with La Puma noting that Cody wore one pair on TV before. Cody mentioned that he’s spent a lot of money on shoes because he has a self-imposed rule about which ones he can wear.
After explaining why it took him so long to wear the Tiffany Air Force 1s, Rhodes admitted he couldn’t wear the same pair of sneakers more than once on TV. He called this the “Ric Flair Rule,” which references the fact that Flair would try not to wear the same robe twice on television.
The ‘Ric Flair Rule’
“I feel like it’s such a tacky thing to say. But the reason why the shoes are all over the map with what you see on TV is I have a weird, what I’d call a Ric Flair Rule. This is a terrible precedent; I don’t encourage this. [Ric was] here six or seven years ago on the show, my Ric Flair Rule is that I can’t wear the same pair twice,” Cody shared. “So I hope I don’t have a run-in every week because then you’re… So that’s why there are shoes on my bus that never make it into the rotation.
“Again, full disclaimer, probably incredibly wasteful,” Rhodes added. “But it’s just a weird Ric Flair Rule. I did wear those Jordan’s on TV. Loved them. They have made it into regular rotation.”
Cody Rhodes did note that this was not something anybody should try to copy. He later joked that WWE could buy him shoes with the multi-billion dollar Netflix deal they recently signed.
