One of the most talked about ‘on-screen romances’ in professional wrestling was the ‘Clout Couple’ in MLW, Richard Holliday and Alicia Atout.
Recently while speaking on Alicia Atout’s YouTube channel, Atout revealed that the Clout Couple angle was a work and the fans were completely worked for believing that the two were a real life couple.
“We definitely need to get into and address and that is the Clout Couple. Our television showmance that set the wrestling world on fire back in 2022. We had people wrapped around our fingers. Truly deep down thinking that us pair were together. And I’m really sorry to break it everyone, if you didn’t see my tweet, but we truly did work the ever-living hell out of all of you,” Alicia Atout said.
Richard Holliday also mentioned that one of the major reasons for the success of the Clout Couple was because both of them were really good at it. He claimed that every segment was very well calculated.
“So it’s kind of multi-faceted. Because, do I believe that people were so entrenched in believing in what we were doing? Yeah! Kind of. Because we were so good at it. Everything we did was really calculated and sometimes we did things on a whim. But even when we did, it was like, that worked great. But we had all these things in our pocket of what we were going to do. And how we’re going to post this. And this that and the other thing.”
Richard Holliday is not surprised by the success of The Clout Couple
Holliday also shared that he was not surprised by their success. But at the same, he was a tad bit surprised by the fans wanting to insert themselves into the lives of Alicia Atout and the MLW wrestler.
“It was classic pro-wrestling right? So for me, I’m not too surprised of how people took it. Some things may be on the back end, yeah maybe I’m surprised of how people are. So they need to be in your life and in my life and try and poke at some certain things. But, no. I’m not surprised. It doesn’t get past people for them to get deeply entrenched in other people’s relationships. So… Kudos to us, honestly,” Richard Holliday said.
Holliday also claimed that the ‘Clout Couple’ angle was the best angle in MLW. One of the reasons for the success was that the duo chose to take the entertainment route when the rest were focussing on wrestling.
