Booker T says he almost got into it with CM Punk backstage at NXT, but sources were reportedly skeptical about his claims.
CM Punk was spotted in the crowd at NXT on March 12. This was not the first time he paid a visit to the WWE Performance Center since his return to the company. Previous reports noted that he has helped the younger talent during his previous visits.
Speaking on his Hall of Fame podcast, NXT commentator Booker T claimed that he almost “got into it” with Punk backstage.
“I saw Punk [at the NXT taping],” he said with a laugh. “[Co-host Brad Gilmore asked him what’s funny] Yeah, no, we’ll talk about that off the air. [Laughs] But I almost had a little run-in with CM Punk. The internet might want to pick that up.
“Me and CM Punk almost got into it at NXT this week. We’ll talk about it later. I don’t want to put it out there because they gonna pick it up and run with it. But yeah, I’ll talk to you about that off the air.”
NXT Sources Skeptical About Booker T’s Claim
Corey Brennan of Fightful (via Fightful Select) then reported an update about the story. NXT sources indicated that there was a feeling of skepticism about Booker T’s comments. Per Brennan, no sources were aware of any such confrontation before the podcast aired. Brennan wrote that security was not informed, as there was no talk of any incident. One source noted that Punk has not had any backstage issues since he returned.
Per Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp, NXT sources said that Punk has been helpful whenever he has been backstage at NXT. It was noted that Punk was said to be in good spirits at the taping, and he mostly kept to himself. Additionally, one source denied Booker’s claim. They cited past examples in which Booker T said something that turned out to be false.
Additionally, the report notes that there was a “sense of frustration” that Booker would make a claim about Punk in that regard, given Punk’s history with backstage altercations, one of which led to him getting fired by AEW.
