Sting wanted Darby Allin‘s help in deciding when to hang up the boots.
“The Icon” is set to have his retirement match at 64 years old this Sunday at AEW Revolution as he and Darby Allin defend the AEW World Tag Team Championship against The Young Bucks. Allin recently spoke to the Battleground Podcast and opened up about how he and Sting seemingly decided together that now was the time.
“Yeah, he looked at me and he said, ‘Hey, you let me know when it’s time to retire because I don’t want to stay around too long and then almost be a parody of myself,'” Allin recalled. “I just feel like with everything [we’ve done], we’ve got nothing left to prove in AEW. We did Wembley, we won the tag championships. We’ve had so many amazing matches with some of the best tag teams like FTR, and it’s just like, ‘Let’s end it right now.’
“He felt comfortable with it and it’s time. It’s gonna be bittersweet once it happens because I almost forget what life was like before Sting. He’s been there every single day. I’ve learned to know him so much outside of the ring, which is the most important part.”
