Mayu Iwatani wants her upcoming movie to connect the world of wrestling with viewers who are yet to find interest in the wrestling product.
The reigning IWGP Women’s Champion, Mayu Iwatani, recently did an interview with Rizu Kimoto of Tokyo Sports. She revealed that schools and companies alike reached out to her to give talks on the wrestling industry and its culture.
“Right now, I’m getting offers to give lectures at IT companies and schools, so I want to be proactive and build bridges with people who have never seen professional wrestling,” she says (translation via Google Translate). She then joked about having to take Japanese Language Proficiency Tests to improve her public speaking skills.
The “Runaway Wrestler” biopic will begin official showing in cinemas in Japan this coming May. Unfortunately, the film’s international availability is yet to be confirmed for overseas fans to watch. WrestleZone will provide more information on the biopic’s availability as it becomes publicly available.
Plans as IWGP Women’s Champion
Mayu also commented on proving herself more as the IWGP Women’s Champion this 2024. Rizu Kimoto noted a comparison to NJPW STRONG Women’s Champion Giulia. The latter is on a title defense streak of eight wins whereas Mayu only has three. The IWGP and STRONG Women’s belts both allow STARDOM talent to compete with the best female wrestlers overseas, but Mayu has only defended her belt once in the United States. She then responds, “I don’t grow if I watch the same matches all the time, so my goal this year is to be the IWGP Women’s Champion and always have matches that will allow me to go beyond my best matches” (translation via Google Translate).
As previously reported, Mayu will defend her IWGP Women’s Championship against fellow STARDOM wrestler Mina Shirakawa at a future date.
