The Rock returned on the January 1 episode of WWE RAW, and he dropped an electric tease.
Jinder Mahal was announced as the returning WWE Champion. He reminded the fans that he was a past WWE Champion, and he stated that he was disappointed by what the United States had become. Mahal said people had never been so divided. He called the United States a joke and vowed to unify the people. Mahal recited the National Anthem in Punjabi, and the fans booed.
He continued his heated message, but The Rock interrupted him. “The People’s Champion” received a thunderous ovation.
The Rock told Jinder Mahal that he was right, as he was not The Iron Sheik. He mocked Mahal, who responded by saying The Rock should be ashamed to represent these people. The Rock said he was proud to be an American, and he was proud to represent the people. He called Mahal the biggest asshole walking God’s green Earth.
The Rock then said that Mahal was not funny, and nobody liked him. He compared him to his own Baywatch movie. The former champion took issue with Mahal calling America a joke. The Rock then called Mahal the Day 1 Douchebag. He proceeded to lead the fans in a “Day 1 Douchebag” chant. “The Great One” then sang Mahal a verse from The National Anthem, which he called The People’s Welcome. The verse included a line about Mahal’s balls. The Rock then said he would whoop his candy ass.
Mahal took the fight to The Rock, but “The Great One” laid him out with a spinebuster. He went for The People’s Elbow, but Mahal escaped. The Rock wished the fans a Happy New Year, and he dropped a tease as he questioned whether he should sit at “the head of the table” when he went out to eat. In doing so, he heavily hinted at a long-awaited clash with Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns.
