Tommy Dreamer recalls some words of wisdom given to him by the late Terry Funk.
Last month, the wrestling world lost one of its most hardcore legends, as WWE Hall of Famer Terry Funk sadly passed away at the age of 79. Throughout his 50-year career, Funk encountered thousands of performers, including fellow ECW alumni Tommy Dreamer. Dreamer and Funk, of course, teamed together on several occasions during the latter half of the 1990s.
During a recent appearance on the Under The Ring podcast, Dreamer recounted some of the valuable advice he received from Terry Funk.
“‘Just be yourself.’ Again, this is when I was struggling. He [said], ‘You have a likable quality. You work really, really hard. Stop playing pro wrestler and be yourself,'” Dreamer said.
Dreamer also revealed that Terry Funk gave him advice on his physical presentation.
“Then he also said — this was early ECW. Fans didn’t like me because I was like young and good looking and had a good body. I miss those times, trust me. But he was just like, ‘Grow a goatee because it’ll make you look tougher. You got a pretty boy face.’ And then he’s like, ‘When you’re my age, it’ll hide your double chin.’ Now I am his age. And, yeah, he was very, very Nostradamus-esque with those predictions for myself.”
Dreamer also spoke about coming to terms with his in-ring retirement and being a man of his word. Read more about Dreamer’s plans to call it quits if he retires here.
