Tony Khan says he won’t be the one that brings Sting‘s in-ring career to an end.
Sting, 64, signed with AEW in December 2020. He then competed in a cinematic match at AEW Revolution 2021, which marked his first bout since he retired in 2016. The legend wrestled a standard match at AEW Double or Nothing 2021, and he has competed on several occasions since then.
Speaking on the AEW All In media call, Khan was asked whether he had talked to Sting about his future. Khan stated that he had, as he made it clear that “The Icon” knows he wants him to stay as long as he feels like he can.
“I have. Sting is very well aware I would like him to stay as long as he feels physically up to wrestling. I think he really enjoys doing it. He’s having a lot of fun. Sometimes, you hit on things in life you think are gonna be good, and they turn out to be great, and for me, a good example of that is Sting and Darby together. Not just on-screen, but off-screen too.
“I’m very excited that this will be one of the great moments in one of the great careers in wrestling. We’ve really had some very special moments for Sting in AEW. I think we’ll be able to hold his AEW run up as these were many of the really special, great moments in my great career. I think Wembley Stadium will be a really important chapter.”
Sting’s Remarkable AEW Run
Tony Khan went on to reflect on the number of special moments Sting had in AEW. He stated that he won’t be the one to “pull the plug” on Sting. Khan made it clear he doesn’t want the legend’s in-ring career to end. Khan also noted that he wants “The Icon” to keep going as long as he wants to.
“There’s been so many great memories for Sting in AEW,” Khan said. “I don’t want it to end. I won’t be the one to pull the plug on him. So when the time comes, Sting knows he needs to be the one to say, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore.’ Because I’m gonna let him go as long as he wants. I want him to stay as long as he can.
“It’s so important to me that we let finish his career the right way. He’s on this amazing run in AEW, he’s undefeated through all these great matches Sting has had. He’s built the best winning streak in all of AEW, which to me is befitting of one of the best wrestlers of all time.”
Sting previously stated that he has not decided on a date for his retirement. His AEW contract is set to expire at some point in 2023.
At AEW All In, Sting and Darby Allin will face Swerve Strickland and AR Fox in a Tag Team Coffin Match. WrestleZone will have coverage of the show as it airs on August 27.
