Chris Jericho reflects on facing Nick Gage.
On the July 28, 2021, episode of AEW Dynamite, Jericho faced GCW star and infamous deathmatch wrestler Nick Gage on AEW Dynamite. The brutal bout featured pizza cutters and plenty of other violent tools of destruction.
Speaking on Talk Is Jericho, Jericho looked back on the favorite matches he’s had on AEW Dynamite. In one highlight, he recalled his match and brought up the spot where Gage hit him with a light tube.
““So Nick Gage was really cool,” Chris Jericho said. “I didn’t really know anything about him. The only thing I ever knew about him was that he almost killed David Arquette, if you watch the documentary about David Arquette becoming a wrestler. I didn’t really know much about him. I remembered we had just done a ‘Dark Side of the Ring’ about him and I thought, wow, this guy’s real interesting. He’s got something, he is such a legit outlaw. MJF suggested that we bring in Nick Gage to be this hardcore killer. So I decided to come out as The Painmaker.
“Man, did we ever have a death match for all death matches. I’ve never been hit before with a fluorescent light tube. When that got me, O don’t know what it is I just watched it back the other day, it just smashed over my head, and something in my head. I was really not feeling good afterwards. I remember I didn’t want to hang out with anybody, I didn’t want to do anything, [and] I just wanted to go in my room and chill. But I didn’t want to go to sleep because I was scared a bad a concussion. It was very strange.”
Chris Jericho Liked Working With Nick Gage
After emphasizing that he enjoyed the match and he liked working with Gage, Jericho joked that he probably wouldn’t take another light tube to the head.
“Really liked him and his unorthodox style. Man, did we ever beat the hell out of each other. That’s my probably my favorite death match that I’ve ever had. I’ll probably never take a fluorescent light tube to the head again. By the way, we made it safe. We took out the phosphorus and put in baking powder.”
