NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion Kerry Morton is excited about Violent J‘s involvement in NWA 75.
The National Wrestling Alliance recently announced that Violent J of Insane Clown Posse will accompany the Brothers of Funstruction (Yabo and Ruffo the Clown) to the ring.
Kerry Morton shared his thoughts on the news in an interview with WrestleZone. Kerry noted that a lot of people speculated that the “Whoop Whoop” teaser tweet was a reference to Marty Scurll. Morton shared his excitement and noted how his dad put things in perspective.
“Everyone gets the assumption that we’re gonna bring in Marty Scurll,” Morton said. “It kind of insulted me a little, when people are questioning our intelligence. Obviously, we know what Marty Scurll has done in the past. I’m not going to assume, I don’t know the story necessarily. But really just for the wrestling fan in general to go out of their way, and to sh-t on our product, just because we did a teaser. I was unaware that Marty Scurll did the Whoop Whoop [as a gimmick]. So when the news [broke] that Violent J is coming, it was really exciting and something different.
“I thought it was neat to bring in Violent J of the Insane Clown Posse. I’m not super familiar with his music. But, you know, I talked to my dad about it recently. He’s like, ‘Dude, this is just kind of exciting. This is something different.’ It brings attention to our big pay-per-view. It’s not necessarily that we’re gonna bring him on full-time, but as a special guest? Sure, why not? Let’s get some new eyes on the product. Let’s get his culture. Maybe they come over and enjoy our style of professional wrestling.”
ICP’s Passion For Wrestling
Kerry Morton went on to highlight Insane Clown Posse’s passion for wrestling. Morton described how he knows Violent J is excited about NWA 75 and that brings a new energy to the entire NWA team. Morton also revealed that the ICP member wants some NWA stars to compete at Juggalo Championship Wrestling.
“I don’t question their passion for professional wrestling. Being on a call, I’ve got to hear some of the thoughts, J’s thoughts. He’s utterly super excited,” Morton said. “For a guy that’s performed in front of thousands every weekend, to come into our show and have this excitement brings a new energy, not only to myself, not only to Billy and the team in NWA, but to a bunch of the boys in the back, and the gals in the back. It makes us want to step our game up more. He’s already [mentioned], ‘Hey, I would like to bring in some of the NWA guys to [my promotion].’
“That’s something — it’s more eyes on us. And I think as a company that’s in the rebuilding phase, especially kind of going towards young talent such as myself. It’s really neat to say hey, like, this guy already wants to bring us in, and…he’s told us too, he’s like, ‘Hey, I’ve been watching the product. I love what you guys are doing right now, you guys are gonna have a different twist.’ For those that have watched NWA in the past two months, I think you can obviously tell there’s a change of direction of where the NWA is going now. Whether that’s catering towards the younger audiences, or independent audiences. But we’re obviously, we know what we’re good at. And now we want to expand that, and bring in more people, and have more eyes.”
Rock ‘N’ Roll ‘N’ JCW
Kerry went on to share his thoughts about his legendary father, Ricky Morton, competing at JCW events in the past. He also shared how excited Ricky is about Violent J coming in for NWA 75. Kerry emphasized that his dad is still super involved and very passionate about the wrestling business.
“That’s exciting, too. My dad’s heavily on Instagram and social media,” Kerry Morton said. “[My dad] called me about two days ago. He says, ‘Hey, I got this message in my Instagram,’ and it’s Violent J. He said, ‘What’s up, Ricky? I can’t wait to see in the future.’ He screenshotted and sent it to me and was like, ‘What this is cool.’ He’s like, ‘Am I booked at The Gathering? Question mark.’
“I was like ‘I don’t know!’ And then he happened to see the Whoop Whoop tweet. I was like, ‘Oh, this is kind of exciting. This is cool.’ My dad’s still heavily influential in professional wrestling. Whether it be IMPACT Wrestling, NWA, helping backstage at AEW, helping backstage at WWE, at the Performance Center. He’s still super, super involved. For him to kind of get excitement too, it brings a new edge, and he still continues to love this business from the day he started.”
“I think it just grows eager and eager on him more,” Kerry said. “I think he’s just really, really…like, he was kind of thrilled. It was kind of ideal, like this is cool. There’s a different culture over there at The Gathering, but they can bring those guys into NWA and kind of tame them just a little bit. This could be something exciting for all of us.”
Kerry Morton will defend the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship against Colby Corino at NWA 75. The two-night pay-per-view takes place on August 26 and 27. Both shows will air on FITE TV. WrestleZone will have full coverage of the pay-per-view as it airs.
