Adam Cole will never forget the moment he won the 2022 Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament.
As the 2023 Owen Hart Foundation tournaments continue to unfold, one of the inaugural winners takes a moment to look back on his historic victory. Last year, AEW introduced a new company tradition — the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament. With this concept, men and women would compete in separate single-elimination tournaments. The winners of each tournament then received custom title belts inspired by Stampede Wrestling’s North American Championship. The winners were also presented a trophy for their efforts, rightfully called the Owen Hart Cup.
Adam Cole and Samoa Joe found themselves in the finals of the first-ever Men’s Owen Hart Foundation tournament. Meanwhile, Ruby Soho and Britt Baker represented the final two on the women’s side. After multiple rounds of competition, Cole and Baker emerged victorious, becoming the first pair of tournament winners.
During a recent appearance on Superstar Crossover, Adam Cole reflected on his history-making moment. As Cole notes, it was one he also got to share with his real-life girlfriend, Britt Baker.
“That whole night was just so unbelievable for so many different reasons. Again, Owen Hart influenced so many wrestlers and still does. The one thing you always hear about Owen is how great of a guy he was on top of being just an unbelievable performer. So, to be in that first tournament and to win it alongside my girlfriend, Britt Baker, and to have Martha there and the championships, and the trophy, and just being able to really showcase and appreciate how important Owen Hart is. Which again, I know us fans and us wrestlers will never, never forget it. But the chance to celebrate him in that way really, really cool. To be a big part of it was unbelievable. I’ll never forget it,” Cole said.
While Cole may not be competing for this year’s Owen Hart Cup, Britt Baker is. On Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite, Baker lost to Ruby Soho in the final opening round matchup of the women’s tournament. This was also a rematch of last year’s finals. Ruby Soho will now move on to face the winner of the Athena vs. Willow Nightingale match.
