WWE’s Eugene wanted to put a special wrestling twist on two of MTV’s former television shows.
Upon the launch of the WWE Network in 2014, WWE began adding a collection of new exclusive shows to its programming lineup. These shows produced a diverse range of concepts, from documentaries to game shows to a prank show entitled “Swerved”. In a recent interview with Steve Fall of WrestlingNewsCo, Nick “Eugene” Dinsmore recalled making a pitch to host a show similar to MTV’s “Remote Control,” which originally ran from 1987-1990.
“When they had the [WWE] network. I pitched the idea for a show, which would be a game show like Remote Control,” Dinsmore said, “where they got the [television screen] and the questions or whatnot. [I envisioned] something similar where I don’t know, somebody’s in a ring, but the same kind of premise where it’s a question and answer. You know the answer to this, or Jeopardy type game show. But Eugene didn’t get that one either.”
Dinsmore revealed he had another idea in mind as well. “I pitched the idea for a video show [too]. They got so many videos. They’re music videos, but also just over time where it’s regular music put to WWE graphics or videos. I thought like they used to have on MTV Total Request Live (TRL).”
“TRL,” of course, reached the height of its popularity in the late 1990s and early 2000s as fans voted for their top ten favorite music videos. The show also featured many live performances and interviews from established and newer musical artists.
While Dinsmore’s pitches would’ve certainly provided a sense of nostalgia, neither of his ideas came to fruition.
