UFC Legend Amanda Nunes Officially Announces Her Retirement

Amanda Nunes secured a dominant victory at UFC 239 over the weekend against Irene Aldana and formally announced her retirement from in-ring fighting after the bout at 35 years old. Aldana was a fill-in opponent for former champion Julianna Peña. She was supposed to have a trilogy fight against Nunes on Saturday, but after breaking her ribs she was forced to withdraw.

Nunes retires on top as the current Bantamweight and Featherweight Champion and is widely considered to be a first ballot UFC hall of famer. She finishes with a record of 16-2 in the UFC, including 12-1 in title fights with 8 successful title defenses. She has beaten the likes of Ronda Rousey, Cris Cyborg, Meisha Tate, and Holly Holm.

She said after the fight that she knew as soon as she signed the bout agreement to fight Aldana that it would be the final fight of her career. But she didn’t want to bring it up until after she got the job done.

Nunes began with UFC in 2013 and is almost a guarantee to be inducted into the hall of fame next summer during the company’s International Fight Week festivities.

“Double champion forever,” Nunes said. “This is the perfect night to retire.” Nunes said she now plans to take a long break from everything and go back to Brazil for awhile. Once she is done with her time away, she plans on becoming a coach at her gym in Florida, Lioness Studio.

It was reported just says ago that Nunes had not ruled out coming to WWE depending on what the contract looks like. She said, “If the contract is amazing, why not?”
