Matt Cardona would pick up the phone and listen, but that doesn’t mean he’s dead-set on returning to WWE.
Matt Hardy and Jon Alba welcomed Matt Cardona as a special guest on the latest episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, and the trio spoke about the rumors that Cardona could be headed back to WWE. Cardona teased fans ahead of the Royal Rumble amidst the rumors that “Zack Ryder” could be making a comeback. Cardona has long maintained that he wouldn’t go back to the company as Ryder, noting that the ‘Woo Woo Woo’ era is dead. Additionally, Cardona has said that a return would likely mean WWE asking him to give up his Major Wrestling Figure Podcast brand, something he is not willing to do.
Now, Cardona tells Hardy and Alba that he’s made his own path since leaving WWE and nothing has been done in an effort to be re-hired. Cardona noted he was choosing his words carefully and he’d be willing to talk with WWE if they called, but he wouldn’t go back unless it was on his terms.
“I’m not doing anything that I have been doing for the past two-and-a-half years to get back to WWE. I’m doing this for me, to create my own path, but I would be lying if I said I never wanted to wrestle at Madison Square Garden or have a WrestleMania moment,” Cardona explained, “or be in a WWE video game or a Mattel figure. Of course. I’m always ready, I would have a conversation 100 percent, because listen — WWE is number one, there’s no denying that. My wife is there now and I’m so proud of her, but right now I feel like I’m doing the work that I needed to do. I needed to leave WWE to find myself and I have. My goal right now is to prove that you don’t necessarily need a quote-unquote major wrestling company to be a pro wrestling star. I think I’ve done that but they know my number. I’ll pick up, you know what I’m saying?”
Asked if Triple H being in charge was an enticing option for him to return, Cardona said it didn’t matter who was in charge. Cardona knows WWE is hot right now, but he doesn’t want to be “just another guy” on the roster.
“It doesn’t matter to me who’s in charge. I had a decent relationship with Vince, had a decent relationship with Triple H, so it really doesn’t matter who is in charge to me. I think WWE now, it is cooking on all cylinders, there’s no denying that,” Cardona said.
“WWE is definitely doing something right and it’s the place to be, but I don’t want to go back just to be another guy on the roster. I did that. I don’t — and if I had to give up the Major Wrestling Figure Podcast, I wouldn’t for that either. I wouldn’t trade that because I’ve created my life with the wrestling and the podcast. This is going to sound horrible but I’m going to say it anyway; I don’t care how you define success, whether it be by accolades, by money, by happiness,” he stated. “I’m the most successful I’ve ever been in my career, so it’d be hard to give that up unless I knew they wanted to use Matt Cardona in a way that I think I should be used.”
Matt Cardona continues to make regular appearances in IMPACT Wrestling and the NWA, in addition to GCW and his Major Wrestling Figure Podcast Live events.
