Mickie James says all we need is just a little patience.
WrestleZone recently spoke with new IMPACT Wrestling Knockouts Champion Mickie James, and she was asked what she’s learned from her husband, Nick Aldis, about the professional wrestling business. During a recent appearance on The Universal Wrestling Podcast, “The National Treasure” shared how Mickie taught him how to look the part and carry himself like a star, something Mickie said is very important to her.
“I’m big on that. That’s so funny that he said that because I felt like he’s always dressed up, but I’m big on that. I feel like when you’re coming to work, you’re coming to work, and this is like a thing that’s just been — this is not just because of whatever — but I don’t show up to work in sweatpants or workout clothes. It’s very rare. If I do, there’s a reason. It’s because I’m coming straight [to the venue] and going straight to the ring. But even then, I’ll change at the arena. I know we’re professional athletes, but when I go through the airport or to any public appearance, I want to look and feel like Mickie James the Superstar because I feel like that’s who the fans want to meet. They don’t want to meet Mickie James, the barn, the girl down cleaning the stalls,” Mickie noted. “They’ll be happy [just to see me], but they don’t want to meet Mickie James, the gym rat or me at Walmart at three in the morning realizing we ran out of milk or something like that.
“So I just I’m very big on that. If you want to be a superstar and you want to be seen and perceived as a superstar, you have to present yourself as a superstar. And how you present yourself is how people will perceive you, and that’s just it,” Mickie said. “Your level of success will always rise to what you believe in yourself and how you put yourself out there. So you have to take that same love and respect of how you feel about yourself, and put it into every aspect of that, because you are your biggest salesperson and you are selling yourself to a company, to your boss, to the audience, and you want to do that the best way you can.”
Mickie then shared what she learned from Nick and said she’s learned to be more patient.
“He’s helped me with my patience. He has a different view, and he’s helped me open up to seeing other people’s opinions and understanding. I felt like I’ve always been pretty good at that, but when you come from different generations — because Nick is younger than me,” Mickie explained, “you come from different generations and different backgrounds and definitely cultures too, because he came up in the UK and the British scene. It’s just the way people do things and even stylistically what they perceive is great and even our favorites are not in line. He’s a big Bret Hart fan and I love Bret Hart, but I was a ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage fan, and I was a Ric Flair fan. I loved the heels. It’s just funny. It’s cool to get it’s cool to bounce ideas off each other and to have like a partner that believes in you but is also willing to be authentic and tell you the truth when you need to hear it, but also sometimes not tell you the truth and just make you feel good when they know that you need that too. Being in a relationship, especially in the business and to people in the business is hard because we have such fragile egos, you know?”
