Roman Reigns didn’t get approval for his infamous “Daddy” line to Theory, but he didn’t exactly need it, either.
Last month at Madison Square Garden, Roman Reigns put Theory on alert. During his appearance on WWE RAW, the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion arrived with The Bloodline to preview his SummerSlam match with Brock Lesnar.
During his promo, Theory interrupted with his Money in the Bank briefcase in hand and proceeded to warn Reigns that he might cash in on his title opportunity. “The Tribal Chief” retorted, stating that Theory needed his own “wise man”. As a piece of advice, Roman Reigns declared that since Theory’s daddy is gone, and if he wasn’t careful, Reigns himself would be his daddy from now on.
In speaking on the Sports Illustrated Media Podcast, Reigns revealed he actually didn’t get formal approval on the shocking promo line. Instead, he side barred with Paul Heyman as an unofficial approval process.
“I said ‘Paul [Heyman], what do you think about this [line]?’ He said, “that’s great. I approve’.”
“Perfect. That’s our approval process,” Reigns explained.
Additionally, Roman Reigns admitted he didn’t necessarily need any approval from higher-ups. With his many years of built-up trust in the company, Reigns explained how he handles that responsibility.
“No, because I’m responsible, and I’ve handled that responsibility for years now,” he noted. “They trust me. I’d never go out there and say anything that would affect our business. That’s the key. And that’s especially at the time we’re in right now with the guard shifting, it’s key that Triple H can see that in a lot of these younger people. You have seen those slip-ups. You have seen those little live conundrums happen to people out there using words.”
“For me, if I’m Triple H or anyone running creative, I’m thinking ‘how can I trust these people with a live microphone?’ because we could go out there and say whatever we want if we wanted to but that would be the last time if we ever did it. So for me, I’ve just had that responsibility and I’ve taken care of it over the years.”
