Edge wasn’t sure about his heel turn, but he rolled with what WWE needed at the time.
Earlier this year, the WWE Hall of Famer turned heel during his feud with AJ Styles and subsequently formed The Judgment Day stable with Damian Priest and later Rhea Ripley. Fans somewhat panned this shift by the legend, and when his own stable kicked him out, it was only a matter of time before he was back to the Edge of old. The veteran returned at WWE SummerSlam to score some revenge on his former teammates, and he has been a face ever since.
In an interview with Bleacher Report, Edge reflected on his recent run and noted that he’s been having working with Priest, Ripley, and Finn Balor. He admitted that they had to make some changes due to injuries, so they had to adapt.
“So far, I’ve had a blast going to work and getting to do a storyline with Priest and Balor and Rhea [Ripley],” Edge said. “It was kind of floating there for a little while. Now, it’s getting a direction and that’s really, really fun. We had to make some changes due to injuries and stuff like that, and you just have to adapt.”
“The Rated R-Superstar” emphasized that he sees himself as a “designated hitter”, so the company can use him as they need him. He expressed that he had some doubts about his heel turn, and he also stated that he would give the sudden face turn a shot when it was time to do so.
“As I’ve said, since I’ve been back, I look at myself as a designated hitter, so you put me in where you need me,” Edge said. “You need me to turn heel? Alright, we’ll give it a shot. I don’t know if it’s going to work, but we’ll give it a shot. Then, ‘OK, we’ve got some injuries, I need you to turn back face.’ ‘Alright, cool. We’ll give it a shot because I’ve been trying to be an assh–e for two months, so we’ll see.'”
Now that he’s a face again, he shared his belief that it’s where he needs to be because the fans want to cheer him and have fun with his final run.
“I do think coming back and being where I’m slotted again is where I need to be for everybody’s sake,” Edge said. “That’s kind of what my fans want. They know my story. I’m not even supposed to be doing this. Let’s let everybody react the way they want to react and let’s have some fun with this thing while it’s happening because it’s not going to last long.”
