Paul Wight Says He Had A Second Hip Replacement In December 2021, Jokes He’s Like Wolverine Now

Paul Wight continues to be featured on commentary on AEW Dark: Elevation, but he has only wrestled a handful of times since he signed with the company. Many fans are curious as to why the former Big Show hasn’t been more active in the ring, and he recently explained that he had surgery.

During an appearance on Submission Radio, Wight stated that he had a second hip replacement in December, so he’s been recovering from that procedure and doing physical therapy. He also noted that he doesn’t see himself wrestling often enough to contend for titles, as that’s not his intention in the first place.

“What we’ve been doing is I had another hip transplant in December,” said Wight. “So now I have two fake hips now, two titanium hips. So I’m like Wolverine. So the process for me has been rehab, physical therapy, get stronger, and my thing coming over here honestly is I came over here to work on my commentary skills because that’s where my future lies in wrestling, that’s where I want to contribute to the business. But I came over to compete periodically in small dosages and I don’t see myself running for championships. That’s not my gig. Maybe if it works out and there’s a younger talent that I can help bring along with a tag team championship, maybe.”

Wight went on to describe how he has put in his time, so it’s the next generation’s turn to step up and shine in the spotlight. He hinted that some stuff is “coming down the line” for him, but he’s excited to see the younger talent thrive at AEW Double or Nothing.

“I’ve done my five nights a week for four decades,” said Wight. “I’ve put in my time. Now for me it’s about not taking anything away from the amazing AEW talent here that deserves that TV time, that deserves that opportunity to make those connections with the audience, that deserves that ability to go out and earn those pay-per-view paydays. This is their time and for me, I’ll pick and choose here and there and squeeze in. We’ve got some stuff coming down the line that’s really cool.

“But this has been an incredible card they put together, an incredible sold-out venue. This talent is excited and I’m excited to watch them. That’s the smart thing you do. I’m never gonna be a guy that’s gonna come in and bully my way and I need my own dressing room, I need to be fighting for the title. That’s not my MO. I want the business to do well and I want the talent around me to do well. I’ll be okay.”
