Mike Tyson will not face criminal charges related to a recent incident on an airplane that saw him punch a man who was harassing him.
TMZ is reporting the San Mateo County District Attorney declared that Tyson will not be charged for several reasons, including “the conduct of the victim leading up to the incident, the interaction between Mr. Tyson and the victim, as well as the requests of both the victim and Mr. Tyson.”
“We thank San Mateo District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe, the San Mateo County Sheriff, and all law enforcement agencies involved in this investigation for their careful, diligent, and professional work,” said Tyson’s attorneys, David Z. Chesnoff, Richard A. Schonfeld and Martin A. Sabelli, in a statement via TMZ.
Tyson was facing multiple criminal charges after he punched the man on a JetBlue flight that was leaving San Francisco on April 20. According to the initial report, the incident occurred after Tyson, who initially agreed to a photo-op with another passenger, grew agitated by the victim, who repeatedly provoked him. Tyson reportedly told the man to relax and leave him alone, but the man continued and Tyson ended up punching him in the face several times.
Subsequent reports stated that Tyson’s camp alleged the man was intoxicated and threw a water bottle at Tyson before the punches were thrown. In addition, the man’s attorney denied a bottle was thrown and chalked things up to his client being “overly excited” to meet Tyson. The man ended up with a bloodied forehead and received medical attention, and Tyson left the plane moments after the incident.
