Eddie Kingston is as real as they come, but he did try to use a gimmick at one point in his career.
AEW star Eddie Kingston recently appeared on Rasslin’ with Brandon Walker of Barstool Sports and would delve into how there’s no difference behind who you see on AEW television and who all of his friends and family see outside of the ring.
“Eddie Kingston’s me at 17-years old turned up 1000 notches. When I was 17, I was still talking sh-t but I was always a little calmer because there was repercussions on the street, you know what I mean? I’m just me,” Kingston stated. “I don’t know any other way to be.”
When asked if he ever wanted to play a character instead of his true self on TV, Kingston explained that he was never good at playing anyone other than himself, pointing to a time he tried to use a gimmick similar to the one Ed Norton played in the 1998 movie Rounders.
”I was never good at that,” explained Kingston. “When I first started wrestling 20 years ago, I tried to be like this playboy, card guy or something,” Kingston said. “I was trying to be like Ed Norton from Rounders. That’s what I was trying to be. I was trying to be him, and my partner was trying to be [Matt Damon’s character]. Blackjack Marciano [was my partner], and it just didn’t click.”
