Danny Doring knows that the new age of social media has changed nearly every aspect of life… professional wrestling included.
Former ECW star Danny Doring recently spoke with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard ahead of ISPW’s Christmas Chaos live event in Butler, New Jersey. Doring, now being billed as “Superstar” Danny Morrison, will challenge former NXT star Bull James for the company’s championship, and he spoke about a recent promo he cut on James and how the wrestling business has evolved in the age of social media.
Doring explained how the new age of social media has allowed him to be more creative in his promos compared to the old days where the ‘character-driven’ and ‘scripted to a point’ promos weighed him down.
“There’s a lot of different aspects to that. Normally, back in those days when I was doing it for TV, it was under direction, so very character-driven, almost scripted to a point, very little wiggle room for us to be creative in those days. Obviously even for a guy like Roadkill, who knows more than one word [despite the character he played], but with this new age in social media and everything and the fact that I don’t really have any restraints on what I can do creatively,” he explained. “It’s kind of like ‘this is what we’re doing, this is the direction and here’s the ball.’ So, in that respect, I can just be creative.
“And what we did after the show, after the match was I wanted the camera directly on me and it was post-match, I didn’t want to do it an hour later or do anything that was pre-taped or whatever,” he stated. “I don’t wanna use the word method acting, but I like to be in that moment that way I can feel what I’m doing in that moment so everything comes across more genuine and creative in that moment. That’s the freedom that I’ve been able to go with in this new age era of social media promos. I’m trying to stay away from doing them in my car like everybody else was, that’s what I see on my timeline a lot and it drives me crazy!” [laughs]
Doring explained his thought process in putting together his own promos, noting that he hopes to capture the fans’ interest and make it memorable, just as he remembers it as a kid.
“I still have a little bit of an ‘old-school’ mentality in the way that I try to make it as special as I can for that person to have them [connect]. Whatever money they spent on a ticket to see whoever they came to see that night, try to make a special moment for them,” Doring said. “Maybe they’ll take it and remember forever like I did when I saw my first show as a kid.”
Danny Morrison faces off with Bull James at ISPW’s Christmas Chaos on Friday, December 10. More details about the event can be seen at this link. You can also check out our full audio interview at the top of this post.
