TNT And TBS GM On AEW Dynamite Switching Networks: ‘Fans Will Migrate Over’

AEW Dynamite will jump from TNT to TBS on January 5, 2022.

The move is somewhat motivated by TNT’s new deal with NHL. By switching to TBS, AEW won’t have to deal with preemptions as often as it has during its run on TNT.

In an interview with Deadline, TNT and TBS General Manager Brett Weitz shined some light on the move. He explained that the network is confident viewers will follow Dynamite to its new home, and he also noted how TBS’s emphasis on a “good time” perfectly fits AEW.

“We obviously make these decisions with a lot of data and gut behind them,” said Weitz. “The brand of TBS is we’re always here for a good time. That is exactly what AEW is and AEW Dynamite, and so, when we look at the concentric circles of TBS and TNT, our TBS viewer is a heavy drama viewer, believe it or not.

“So, we know that those fans will migrate over, and we also believe that wrestling fans find the content wherever it is, and we also think, more wrestling’s better for everybody, honestly.”

Speaking of AEW’s footprint on TNT, Weitz also commented on a potential renewal of “Rhodes to the Top,” which just wrapped up its first season. When asked, Weitz said the network is waiting to see how VOD numbers, among other factors, play out before it makies a decision about a second season for the show.

“No, [we haven’t made a decision],” said Weitz. “Not yet. It just ran and finished, and we’re settling in with numbers. You know this, Nellie, to just go Live+Same Day is so antiquated. You want to see how things are consumed on VOD and see how things continue to play out.”
