Cody Rhodes might give off similar vibes, but his recent look on AEW television wasn’t directly inspired by the source fans think it was.
Cody Rhodes was a recent guest on My Mom’s Basement with Robbie Fox and addressed speculation that his recent ring gear was inspired by “Homelander” from the Amazon TV series The Boys. Rhodes started by saying his look was not inspired by the fan-favorite character, but he didn’t try to steer away from it since the fan element created some fun interactions because of it.
“So The Boys, which is a wonderful everything —if you’re not reading or watching The Boys, it’s outstanding — it isn’t, but I feel bad saying it isn’t. Everyone thought the initial cape that [seamstress] Ms. Sandra Gray had made [for AEW Double Or Nothing] was “Homelander” inspired, but really, I think it was a colonial soldier, is what inspired it. I’ve never once, because of the fun reactions online, I’ve never told her to deviate,” Rhodes explained, “only because if people find that parallel and they like it, why not? There is a kind of parallel with characters in terms of my ‘goodie two-shoes’ nature not always sitting that great with wrestling fans. I can be the good guy, but they don’t have to cheer me, they can do whatever they’d like. As a wrestling fan, you can do whatever you want.”
Rhodes also shared a behind-the-scenes story about the majestic cape that came with his “Grand Slam” ring gear, explaining that he thought it’d look great for a specific camera shot… that never got picked it.
“When it comes to — the outfit she made for “Grand Slam,” there’s a slight miss and it’s no one’s fault, not hers for sure. The cape was 22 feet long and I thought that would be the coolest looking thing from an overhead shot, and we never once shot it overhead,” Rhodes said. “So this beautiful cape was draped on the LEDs [ramp] and we had shoved it into the elevator that I come up in, I was monitoring how it flowed, there’s only a few really bad photos on Twitter of it. It looks like it’s super-imposed but it was a 22-foot long cape. I’ll try it again at another point and get a better shot of it.”
