Tony Khan sees the positives in having both televised All Elite Wrestling shows on different networks, and he can’t wait for fans to learn more about what’s in store for the Owen Hart Foundation partnership.
Tony Khan was a guest on Friday’s Busted Open Radio and spoke about this week’s announcement that Rampage will stay on TNT when Dynamite moves to TBS next year.
“Well, it’s going to work out great. Tonight, you’ll see Rampage on TNT and Rampage is going to stay on TNT for the long term. Dynamite moving to TBS, it’s win-win. First of all, it worked out very well for us financially and it’s great to be able to keep Rampage on TNT, which has got similar penetration.
“It’s a win-win, I think, for us to be across these two great networks. WCW two decades ago had some really, really good runs on both networks, and to have that penetration with two separate audiences, I think it’s great. There is a sports audience on Friday nights that TNT’s got a little bit more history with, and there’s some more places, frankly, after a Thursday NBA game where some of the sports bars across this country, where on Friday night, they already have TNT on the TV. So, I think it makes a lot of sense to have both networks in play for us. I’m really excited that Rampage will be on TNT for the long haul, and I’m very excited about Dynamite in January making that move to TBS.”
Khan also spoke about one of this week’s other big announcements regarding the Owen Hart Foundation partnering with AEW, and explained how it came to fruition.
“This is going to be a tremendous, tremendous event and a great partnership with Martha Hart and the Owen Hart Foundation. Martha is a very intelligent woman, very intelligent, to say the least. She thought long and hard about this and we talked for a long time about this. I talked to Martha about this for over a year on a regular basis. She put a lot of thought into it and we put a lot of thought into it, and that’s how this came together. She’s a really good person and I think she wanted to make sure we were good people too, and I really like Martha a lot and can’t say enough great things about the legacy of Owen Hart and how it means so much to so many of us. What a great opportunity it is to celebrate his life, we had this in the works for a long time and [The Owen Hart Cup Tournament] can be a really special prize in wrestling, I think people are going to want to win ‘The Owen’ and I believe that we’ll establish that as a really special thing in AEW, a really special, annual tradition.”
Khan said he’s excited to tell people more about the event, teasing that he’s got a few match announcements and big booking plans up his sleeve. He said it will all come in due time, but the Owen Hart announcement was big for AEW and anticipates they’ll have a bunch of cool announcements once the dust settles after Rampage.
“It was a lot of hard work. Chris Jericho introduced me to Martha, and without that introduction, I don’t think this would be happening. I really appreciate Chris, who’s going into his big match against American Top Team [on Rampage], I’m really thankful he made that introduction to Martha.”
