IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion El Desperado confirmed on Twitter that he tested positive for COVID in the wake of NJPW’s Wrestling Dontaku weekend. Desperado was one the six wrestlers pulled from night 2 of Wrestling Dontaku, after two wrestlers arrived to the venue with fevers. In total, NJPW disclosed nine positive tests in the aftermath. Kazuchika Okada and Taichi both confirmed positive tests, with El Desperado being the third to confirm their status.
Desperado detailed a brutal experience with the virus. He suffered from a fever, dizziness, “strange taste,” terrible cough, and other rough symptoms. He claims fits of hunger but no appetite, interrupted sleep, and goes on to implore people to get tested and get vaccinated, ending with a thank-you to the staff in Tokyo that took care of him.
Like Okada & Taichi, Desperado has not been on the recent NJPW Road To Wrestle Grand Slam shows, and no plans have been announced regarding his IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship.
