NXT Takeover
Adam Cole vs Pat McAfee
Adam Cole -1250 (2/25)
Pat McAfee +575 (23/4)
The match was confirmed earlier this week after McAfee’s chaotic appearance on the August 5th edition of NXT. Triple H appeared on ESPN’s Get Up on Thursday where he told McAfee to put his money where his mouth is and face the franchise player of NXT, and WWE confirmed McAfee accepted the challenge later that night.
Cole and McAfee’s latest spat started after the former NXT Champion was an unadvertised guest on the July 23rd episode of the Pat McAfee Show. The show started off on the right foot but things quickly got heated after McAfee took a few sly digs at Cole’s size. McAfee and Cole talked about a number of topics including Cole’s journey through the independent scene to WWE, but things started to get tense once McAfee brought up the comparisons to Shawn Michaels and how Cole would agree that he’s nowhere near the talent that Michaels was.
Cole said McAfee claims he’s trying not to offend him but that’s what happened, then McAfee took it a step further and said Michaels made his own name where Cole needed help from The Undisputed Era to succeed. The two kept going at each other from there by insulting each other’s respective professions, with Cole finally losing his temper and knocking over a mic stand after McAfee said he couldn’t win on his own because of how small he was. Cole got in McAfee’s face and proceeded to drop a few f-bombs on his way out, leaving the host stunned. Cole ended up issuing a statement to apologize for his actions but things were not over yet.
McAfee showed up on this week’s NXT, ending the show by punting Cole in the head. In a new storyline update, WWE claims Cole has “undisclosed” injuries.
