Swamp Ring & ‘Gill Men’: Booker T Gives His Reaction & Original Idea For Swamp Fight

The Hall of Fame co-host Brad Gilmore said it best when Booker T “swung for the fences” pitching his original idea for the Swamp Fight match that took place yesterday evening at WWE Extreme Rules.

The two-time WWE Hall Of Famer had quite the idea laid out for what would have been one memorable battle between WWE Champion Braun Strowman and his old ally Bray Wyatt as the two got down and dirty in the gator infested swamps of south Florida.

“My idea for the Swamp Match would have been a ring suspended over the swamp. Now the ropes would have been made out of like vine, whatever, you know? It wouldn’t have looked like regular ropes. It would have looked like it was weathered and like it had been there for quite some time. With algae growing it and whatnot.”

“He gets in the swamp ring, and he’s waiting on Bray Wyatt and that’s where, you remember we talked about the…gill men? The gill men would have came out of the water from each side. Then we would have had some action right there. He would have had fight through the gill men before he would have got to Bray Wyatt and hen he would have to fight Bray Wyatt but then he would have thought that he would have beaten Bray Wyatt, but then The Fiend would appear. ‘Oh my God…’ I’m getting scared already, man.”

Gilmore tosses up some old photos of The Creature From The Black Lagoon and Booker pops at the sight of seeing them.

“Four of those right there, four of those, coming up out of the swamp. One at a time, oh my goodness, man! Then again, then again, that might have been awful!” Booker laughs, who does gives his thoughts on the actual bout that took place. He thought while the the match was interesting visually, he believes there could have been a real opportunity to really rope fans in by utilizing the element of fear.

“I didn’t sleep for a week after watching The Exorcist and when having something like this, a character like Bray Wyatt, a character like The Fiend, I really think that we could have gotten some really, really deep emotion with fans walked away from this thing literally perhaps afraid to go to sleep tonight and I think going into something like this, you gotta have that kind of mindset in order to make people say, ‘Man, even as scared as I was, that was awesome.'”

Booker does say that finding that balance is indeed a delicate one and tough to pull off.

“I think with something like this, it’s a stretch. It’s hard to actually find that spot where it’s gold or not with something like that. Was it interesting? Yeah, but then again, it left me there with one of those cliffhanger moments…”
