Curtis Axel is no longer with WWE, as the company announced his release on social media this afternoon.
No reason for the move was given; a two-sentence statement was posted on WWE.com:
WWE has come to terms on the release of Curtis Axel.
We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
Axel is the son of the late “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig and grandson of Larry “The Axe” Hennig and had been with WWE since 2008. He made his TV debut as a “rookie” named Michael McGillicutty on NXT in 2010 and later changed his name and joined The Nexus stable. He was most recently was teaming with Bo Dallas as “The B-Team”.
Axel is a two-time WWE Tag Team Champion, and he also held the Intercontinental Championship on one occasion. Axel has been used sparingly in recent months, with his last match for WWE being a loss to Daniel Bryan on the February 8 episode of Smackdown. Prior to that, his only match in 2020 had been a dark match loss to Mustafa Ali on January 3.
WWE made a number of cuts in recent weeks, with 24 confirmed on-air wrestler releases confirmed on April 15. It’s unclear why Axel’s release was granted, but Wrestlezone has reached out for more information and will update when we learn more.
