Dustin Rhodes On His First Time In A Wrestling Ring, Stepping Out Of His Box & AEW Focusing On Themselves

Dustin Rhodes’ hometown of Austin, TX dug deep into what “The Natural” is all about.

Richard Whittaker of The Austin Chronicle has a very in-depth article on the oldest Rhodes’ brother and in the piece Dustin talks about his first experience as a kid getting into a wrestling ring as he heard rumors that the turnbuckles were made out of poured lead.

“I walked up to the ring and my dad came out of the dressing room and was so mad at me. He said, ‘Don’t you ever, ever get into that ring.'”

At the time, he didn’t know why his dad was so hot about it. Now, he realizes his father was protecting him. “Back in those days, [wrestlers] were away from their families, it pulled on the wife-husband relationship and the children. I didn’t understand that back then, but I can see that now.”

Dustin also shares his initial uncertainty when accepting to embrace the controversial and bizarre role of Goldust:

“I didn’t want to step outside the box too much, and that kept it from being successful for the first six months. Once I stepped outside of the box and did something that was very uncomfortable for me to do, it worked. Well, shit, why didn’t I do that from the beginning?”

He then took mention that he doesn’t look at WWE as competition but rather chooses to focus on the road that AEW is on. “I don’t look at it as competition. I look at it as us putting on the best television show that we possibly can,” Rhodes said.
