Dean Malenko: I Would Have Trusted Chris Benoit With My Life And My Kids

Dean Malenko recently did a shoot interview with RF Video. They released an 11-minute preview, which you can watch below. During it, Malenko talks about getting to work with Dynamite Kid, his thoughts on Eddie Guerrero, and touches on the Chris Benoit tragedy.

Check out some highlights below:

Getting to work with Dynamite Kid:

It was a dream come true. He’s the guy that kind of set the standard for guys my size and my style.

On Eddie Guerrero:

I got to work a lot of Eddie’s brothers and knew his dad through my dad, and that was the first time I got to work with Eddie. He was a little standoffish in the beginning, but once we clicked as in-ring guys and friends we were on.

His first meeting with Chris Jericho:

I saw Chris a couple times when I was working for All Japan, I got the opportunity to watch the New Japan stuff on TV. I ran into him one time, him and Brad Armstrong were together at a train station, we were going to another arena. We knew each other from that standpoint but didn’t really get to spend some time, but once we did, just like Eddie we clicked from the very beginning.

Chris Benoit changing after Guerrero’s death:

Yeah, to a certain extent. Not that we went our own ways, but I was a producer for the company and Chris was an in-ring talent.

… I would have trusted Chris with my life and my kids.

Benoit tragedy thoughts:

We were in Houston, Texas, and I was assigned to the match between CM Punk and Chris Benoit. I was excited about that and just about as excited as Punk was since it was his first time wrestling against Chris. Chris no-showed and for Chris Benoit to not show up to the arena, something bad must have happened.

There were times when I said, “I should have spent more times with Chris. Maybe I could have been the difference.” But, you can’t look at things like that in life.
