Joey Janela is one of AEW’s brightest stars but he’s been in the headlines recently for reasons unrelated to his in-ring career. Various outlets reported that Janela got into a fight with nZo at a Blink-182 concert in New Jersey last week. Both participants tweeted about the incident and Janela also talked about it (and more) during an appearance at the Apter Chat.
“It was just a drunken incident,” said Janela. “I was a little wasted and just ran into him and we just had an exchange of words over the last year on the internet. …I was like, ‘Hey, alright.’ I was just joking and I said, half way joking, I was like, ‘Hey, you wanna fight?’ And he threw up his fists. That’s it.”
“I was like, ‘Alright, I guess I gotta fight now,'” said Janela. “We did throw a few hands before the video started and then afterwards we both thought in our heads, “why are we fighting right now?’ Especially I thought, “What am I doing?'”
Janela said he realized he need to be mature about the incident. “There’s got to be a cutoff, you know?,” said Janela. “I can’t go down that path of being a 30-year-old being arrested and ending up on the internet.”
Janela also discussed his style of wrestling. “I do all types of wrestling.” said Janela. “I do every type of wrestling and I think I thrive in every type of wrestling. I’m not gonna say I’m the best wrestler in the world but I think I’m up there because I can adapt to anyone’s styles….:
Additionally, Janela discussed his match with Jon Moxley at AEW Fyter Fest. “It was great, it was fourteen years coming,” said Janela. “I did the All In show in September and that was great against Adam Page. And that was crazy, you know. I was tearing up going out there and tore it down there and got a lot of new fans doing that.”
