Tony Nese won the WWE Cruiserweight Championship at WrestleMania 35. Since then, he’s been at the forefront of a period of transition for 205 Live. The first PPV defense of Nese’s championship came at Money in the Bank when he defeated Ariya Daivari. At Stomping Grounds, Nese defended the championship against Akira Tozawa and Drew Gulak. Gulak won the match by pinning Tozawa.

All three superstars showcased their cruiserweight prowess. Early on, Tozawa dove all around the ringside area to take down Nese and Gulak. Later on, Gulak suplexed Tozawa onto Nese. The champion found himself locked in the Gulock but Tozawa broke up the hold with a diving senton. Nese nearly got the win after a springboard moonsault on Gulak but Tozawa broke it up again. After Gulak superplexed Tozawa, Nese missed a 450 splash and almost got pinned after a shining wizard. Gulak pinned Tozawa after a torture rack neckbreaker.
