Buddy Murphy spoke with News.com.au in Australia before Wrestlemania 35. The current WWE Cruiserweight Champion talked about his role in NXT and how he came to call himself ‘WWE’s best kept secret’ and where the moniker came from:
“I was watching a Takeover (NXT-branded pay per view) and wondering why I wasn’t on it — I was being told how good I was and I believed that I should be on it — I was no different to anyone else.
“That Takeover I grabbed a notepad and pen and the ‘best kept secret’ came out — because I’m getting told just how good I am and no one knew — I was technically a secret to the whole world.
“It was a scary thing to do — to give yourself a nickname like that, you have to deliver, because if I didn’t I would have shot myself in the foot pretty badly.”
Murphy said he’s looking forward to his first WrestleMania match, and he’s also looking forward to a victory over Tony Nese:
“This is my first Mania and it is massive and super special. Because it is WrestleMania everyone wants to do that bucket list of wrestling at a WrestleMania and doing that as a champion makes it even more special.
“I’m looking forward to wrestling Tony Nese, defending my title and cementing my legacy as the greatest cruiserweight of all time.”
