Mickie James gives clarity to her in-ring status.
While she may not be actively competing in the ring, Mickie James has taken on a number of non-wrestling roles in recent months. Aside from spearheading her second all-women’s wrestling show (titled ‘HER’), James also currently serves as an Executive Producer, Creative Director, and Head of Female Talent for Ohio Valley Wrestling. Beyond that, James is also preparing to co-produce the pro wrestling rock musical, “The Last Match,” while simultaneously portraying the role of The Mother on stage. James, of course, is also a mother in real life as well.
Given her stacked lineup of responsibilities, many fans have been curious about James’ future in the squared circle. In a new interview with WrestleZone’s Ella Jay, James clarified that despite these added obligations, her in-ring career is not finished.
“I am not retired,” James said. “Everything is balance, and I do have a lot on my plate right now. I knew we were planning [HER] in Australia. I’m a co-producer with The Last Match musical, and I’m so grateful to be a part of that. They’re so many incredible names attached to and part of it. So when they offered the role of The Mother, Nick [Aldis] wasn’t with WWE [yet]. A lot of changes have been happening. Obviously, because of that, we’ve had to make a lot of changes.”
Maintaining Balance
“I thought it was important for our family that I was home more, for Donovan,” James continued. “Nick gladly took that role when I was on the road full-time, and it was just a lot trying to balance everything, trying to get ready for this and do that and Donovan’s schedule and everything else, so I decided to take a backseat for a minute, as far as my in-ring. Trying to hustle every two weeks and go out for these four-day trips, it became a lot.”
“I still take bookings, and I still do signings here and there. And then obviously, my focus has been on these projects for right now. Just while we were trying to balance out what this new landscape looked right. I am open to wrestling. I love wrestling, but also I’ve got a lot of cool stuff on the horizon that I’ve been doing or have been working on or have already done and it hasn’t been released yet.”
James’ last match took place at IMPACT Wrestling’s 2023 Bound For Glory event, when she unsuccessfully challenged Trinity for the Knockouts Championship. Looking ahead though, Starrcast Events confirmed that James will return to action at the upcoming HER event on April 12. There, James will rekindle her rivalry with Alicia Fox, who now performs under the name of Vix Crow.
