Stars in Progress: Luke Harper Rising, Dean Ambrose Carrying RAW, New Feature Debut of “The Championship Round”

STEP UP: Dean Ambrose

dean ambroseEven with that hilarious, lazy looking botched dive at the end of this week’s RAW, Dean Ambrose is carrying WWE programming. Since Night of Champions, he’s been pretty much the only reason to watch RAW; I don’t remember the last time I saw Smackdown. Obviously Seth Rollins and The Authority play a big part in the ongoing story, but it’s nothing that hasn’t been done before, and quite honestly, done better. It’s the uniqueness of Ambrose that sells the scene.

On a negative note, I’m not really feeling that Dean got his head kicked through cinder blocks a month ago. If somebody did that to Cactus Jack, he’d been covering them in barbed wire and a gallon of their own blood. Ambrose responded with… green mist. It was an entertaining segment, no doubt, but it sort of felt like a late-era DX prank, and not something two bitter, blood-thirsty rivals would do. Maybe that’s yet again the appeal of the “Lunatic Fringe” though – just when you’ve got all the answers, he changes the questions.
