The NXT Promotion: Step Down
I used to really enjoy NXT, WWE’s developmental promotion out of Full Sail University in Winter Park, FL. There was a time when NXT was marginally more enjoyable than Raw or Smackdown. These days – and maybe it’s because I have to do live coverage – I’m much less enthusiastic about Thursday nights.
Every once in awhile there’s a match or two worth watching. Sami Zayn and Corey Graves are intriguing. Charlotte ain’t half bad. But Emma and Paige are now on the main roster and much less actively involved in NXT. Adrian Neville is a great ring worker, but he can’t talk. I honestly don’t remember the last time The Ascension worked a match longer than two minutes. There literally is no division for them to work in so the titles, and by extension of the titles, their entire run, means nothing.
It’s funny that the things WWE fans like about NXT are all features of high quality indie wrestling. Small crowds, grassroots support, hilarious chants, athletic high flyers in the main event, an overwhelming sense of elitism, etc. NXT was very good. NXT could be very good again. Right now they’re transitioning some of their best stars to the main roster, and it will take some time for the developmental product to find its footing again.
