Stars in Progress: Daniel Bryan/HHH, AJ Lee, ADR vs RVD

AJ LeeAJ Lee – One Step Up

It's still the divas, so this will likely be considered wasted space by many of you, but I'm a fan of women in wrestling — when it's done correctly. AJ Lee's promo, albeit laced with irony, was delivered very well. And I enjoyed it.

I found it ironic because it was hard to take some of what she was saying seriously. She made good points about the Total Divas shows, and the women in it (aside from Natalya, who had no business being part of this segment), but I don't remember AJ having the toughest road to stardom either.

Sure, she trained while working a full-time job. Sure, she had a "short" run on the indy circuit before getting signed by WWE. And yes, she even had to do the FC and NXT thing before being called up. But four years from nothing to Smackdown debut is hardly typical.

She's a super-fan living out her dream — even if she did "bust her ass" to get there — and it's hard to sympathize if that's the emotion she was looking for from us.

Luckily though, AJ's good. She's a fantastic actress and natural storyteller, so she made it believable, all things considered.

Plus, it's wrestling, so style wins over substance anyway. What you say doesn't have to be true if you sell it well. And AJ did that Monday.

Her claims of "saving" the divas division are far-fetched, to say the least, but maybe her promo on top of the E! series can provide a spark moving forward.
