Superstar Spotlight: WWE Superstars Primo & Epico

Superstar Spotlight: Primo & Epico

I have to admit, I wasn’t too sure who to choose for the subject of this week’s ‘Spotlight’ because of the big weekend ahead. Instead of focusing on all of the big matches and storylines that we will see on Sunday, I want to focus on who won’t be there. Primo and Epico are the only champions who will not be on the card, and it seems like the tag champs are getting the short end of the stick. The Intercontinental Championship was the ‘joke’ of Wrestlemania for a while, but Cody Rhodes has brought the prestige back in the past few months. Aside from WWE ignoring the tag division, give me a reason why these two guys don’t deserve a spot. Seeing them in an impromptu match against a team like the Usos or Curt Hawkins & Tyler Reks would be a nice addition to the card. It would be much better than a Brodus Clay squash match, to be quite honest. I like Brodus, but Wrestlemania should be the night where big feuds culminate and the best workers are acknowledged.

Primo and Epico are talented guys who work well together, but they barely get enough air time to get over. This wasn’t a problem a few months ago, but being fed to Big Show isn’t doing them any good. We have seen this time and time again, with many Superstars easily beating the tag champs, often times in handicapped matches. The last title defense I can remember them having was on RAW over a month ago when they participated in a triple threat. I know titles are less valued these days, but with as many hours of television as they have there should at least be two defenses a month. Primo and Epico may not be the team to build a division around, but we won’t know unless they are given a better chance. I liked the short period where they were aligned with Hunico, but I think they are much better off now. Let’s face it, Rosa Mendes is hot, and she stays out of the way until she is needed. Rosa cheers for her team and helps them along, and she is all a manager needs to be with these guys. They can do all the work in the ring and let her cut the promos like she has been doing with the quarter screen interviews we have seen lately.

I can name a few people they can start a rebuilding around pretty quickly: The Usos, Hawkins & Reks, Dolph & Swagger and Kofi & R-Truth. On top of that, you have the Kings of Wrestling down in FCW, but what about some of the other NXT alumni? Husky Harris could be brought back up with his brother, and Percy Watson and Darren Young could get back together and reform the South Beach Boys. There are a bunch of possibilities, that’s for sure, but the point is WWE’s excuse of ‘tag team wrestling doesn’t matter’ is weak. HHH was said to be interested in focusing on developmental territories and the tag division, but nothing has really happened yet. TNA proved that you can still have a successful tag division with teams like Team 3D, Beer Money and LAX. They were the focus but you also had the British Invasion and Ink Inc, and Motor City Machine Guns were always around too. The point is that I care about tag team wrestling, and so do many other fans, and we want to see a better representation of it in WWE.
